Dr. Mitchell received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University and served for seven years as an assistant and tenured associate professor in the School of Medicine, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (1975 – 1982). He has contributed as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Case Western University Medical School’s Department of Rheumatology, as well as the Ohio State University, School of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Several administrative positions held included, Director of the Ohio Industrial Commission’s Rehabilitation Division (1982 – 1984), President of National Rehabilitation Planners (1984 – 1997) and the Executive Director of the International Center for Labor, Industry and Rehabilitation (1984 – 1992).
Dr. Mitchell served for 12 years (1997 - 2009) as Vice President, Health & Productivity Development for Unum US. In this position, Dr. Mitchell provided leadership in developing innovative solutions to emerging health and productivity issues. Current activities focus on the various links and expected ROI of disease and disability management programs. He also served as the lead on Unum’s studies Lost time in the health care industry, the FMLA Progression study, the Health, Productivity and Employability of Cancer Survivors and the Behavioral Health Productivity Study.
Following his retirement from Unum in March, 2009, Ken now serves as the managing partner for the WorkRx Group, a strategic partner of the Judgment Index USA. The WorkRx Group assists employers manage the impact of lost time due to injury, Illness or chronic disease. Employer continuing education programs on health and productivity solutions, Quality of work life for cancer survivors, solving the motivation paradox, i.e. employees stuck due to ambivalence and resistance to a return to work as well as the aging worker are available.
Ken is married to Ruth Ann Mitchell for 40 plus years with two daughters, 2 son in laws and 5 grandchildren.
